Diligence

Series: Asleep | Week 3: Run from Complacency

Read Revelation 3:19 in your personal Bible or at the link provided.

Review

  1. What does Jesus do?
  2. Who are the actions applied to?
  3. What does Jesus say we should do in response?

Reflect

Jesus follows His rebuke toward the Laodiceans with grace. He disciplines, but like parents who want the best for their children, He corrects those He loves. His call is to be diligent, requiring a quickness to the church’s actions that wouldn’t exist if they stayed indifferent.

When we’re asleep to our need for God, we can easily pretend or forget that the need exists. We don’t do this with other things, such as our need for air or shelter, but it can happen so often with God. How can we depend on Him and His provision with diligence? Prayer, fasting, and rest are all disciplines that can recenter our focus on Him.

What would it look like to ask for things in prayer that only God could provide? What would it look like to fast from something you’ve depended on, such as social media or TV? What would it look like to honor the Sabbath? All of these are the opposite of being asleep. If you find yourself indifferent towards your need for God, these are ways you can be more awake to His presence than anywhere else.

Respond

  • What is your prayer life like right now? What would be different if all your prayers last week were answered? How would the world be different?
  • Is there anything you find yourself depending on that God might be calling you to fast from? Who can you invite to hold you accountable as you seek God instead?
  • What do you have a hard time relinquishing control over? How can you release your grip on it this week and fill that time with rest in the Lord’s presence?

Pray through these questions, and write down what God is prompting you to do next. Share with a friend, and take a step to apply it.
